Join our leaders, activists and friends to support our relentless commitment and work in communities and environments we love around the world. Here’s where we are going come June 2013!
Ken Nedimyer, resident CNN Hero, takes us on an amazing expansion of our coral restoration SCUBA program this year in one of the best places to dive in the world, Bonaire. Learn Basic, Open Water or Advanced PADI certification, plant new staghorn coral and be responsible for the seeding and building of an entirely new reef. Spend your summer afternoons with other teens sea kayaking, sailing and windsurfing in the waters 30 miles from Curacao, 50 miles north of Venezuela, and 86 miles east of Aruba in the Caribbean crossroads – with NO traffic lights!
Spend your summer with us on a Bonaire community service trip!
A Central American paradise, wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this tropic land is fondly referred to as the “New Costa Rica.” Word is getting out – so hurry, it’s only a matter of time before this huge heap of geology with 19 volcanos is discovered. Nicaragua is a study in contrasts – smiling children laugh and play during the day and sleep in shacks at night, fishermen struggle to feed and house their families while generously offering food to others. We concentrate our service efforts working alongside the families on projects that are initiated by the community. A descent down a 1,600-foot volcanic slope is one of the newest sports, volcano boarding is a highlight, as well as sea kayaking Las Isletas, an archipelago of 365 little volcanic islands (one for each day of the year!)
Travel with us on this Nicaragua summer community service program!
Slap those Domino tiles down on the table! Truly a treat, our first stop is El Sendero Del Cacao (a chocolate factory) before heading to the rural Yabacao region to expand the Luz Maria Learning Center for the children of Cruz Verde. We head west to Haiti, a land of great beauty and great struggle to learn about the rich and vibrant history of the Haitian people and experience what life is like in this complex country. At Zanmi Lasante (“Partners in Health”) Sociomedical Complex, a beacon of hope for the poor of Haiti, we see the model for public health initiatives around the world. Working with the many orphaned children unable to care for themselves, we teach English, play games and care for them while making their load just a little lighter.
Explore the beauty of the Dominican Republic/Haiti with our summer community service program.
Indonesia, Bali Community Service: Bali Hai
It’s impossible to think about Bali’s cultural heart, Ubud, without also considering Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. We travel to the land of “EPL” fame and explore the Hindu island paradise full of terraced rice paddies, tropical jungles, sandy beaches and Technicolor waters and find there is much more to this country than what’s portrayed on screen. We support an orphanage with an open arm philosophy and where there is always room for one more. Working with the children we teach, paint, and plant organic gardens and have the unique opportunity to travel to a nearby village to work in the terraced paddy rice fields. We learn about local reef restoration efforts, explore the turtle conservation rescue project, and help with local stewardship efforts at the Green School. A land where the spirits come out to play in the moonlight, and every night is a festival – if you listen carefully, you can surely hear the call of Bali Hai.
Join us for a life changing trip on our Bali summer community service program.
Middle School programs
Participate in additional community service days, something our students this year just couldn’t get enough of! We spend more time at a wolf sanctuary on our newly named 5280’ (formally Mile High Adventure). We work alongside a local school on our Pura Vida program for a few additional days. And we’ve added a chance for the students on our Great Divide program to do community service with Habitat for Humanity.
We will also be going to a Cubs game on our Chicago service program for middle school students, Windy City.
Costa Rica Service: El Sendero: We will be visiting the indigenous tribe of the Bribri Indians to learn about their unique culture and chocolate plantation.
Wapenduka: Our stop at the Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sponsored cheetah reserve will allow us to work along conservationists and learn what it takes to preserve this beautiful creature.
