At The Road Less Traveled, we recognize that nature is a powerful teaching tool, and that there are many lessons the waves and sandy shores can teach us. Our programs combine adventure, service learning, and a commitment to the environment.

Ko Samet, Thailand
From the sandy shores to the exotic sea-side coves, Ko Samet is an island paradise. Tucked away in Khao Laem Ya – Mu Ko Samet National Park, there are plenty of pristine and unspoiled sections of beach to explore. Quiet and relaxing, this beautiful island with powdery white sand derives its name from the cajeput trees that grow on the island, called “samet.” This magical escape is the perfect destination to snorkel above coral reefs and kayak the clear waters.
Hanelei Bay Beach
Nestled at the foot of Hanelei’s misty green mountains, Hanelei Bay Beach is a gathering point for location fisherman, surfers, and beach-goers of all kinds. With over 3 miles of picturesque sandy shoreline and dreamlike surf, this crescent-shaped bay is ripe with positive vibes and adventure opportunities. With waves for every surf level and plenty of diverse coral reefs to snorkel over, this beach mecca is a must-visit.
South Lake Tahoe Beaches
Overflowing with sparkly blue water and beach-side wildflowers, this freshwater haven is a pristine summer destination. This rocky, alpine lake provides a stunning contrast to the nearby Sierra Nevadas and is an alternative to the traditional Caribbean escape. Paddleboard along the 72 miles of Tahoe shoreline and explore the quirky caves or hike high into the neighboring Sierra Nevadas.
Life lessons we can learn from the beach:
Nature is a powerful force and an even more powerful teacher. From snorkeling in Hawaii to diving in Bonaire, our beach-side programs remind us how incredible our world is and challenge us to pursue our passions and persist even when we encounter obstacles. Nature teaches us to embrace obstacles like waves with optimism — to find joy in learning how to surf (even though, like life, it can take several tries to stand up) and to take care of our bodies. We are not invincible and nature reminds us of this the second we forget to apply sunscreen. And finally, along with many other lessons we can learn from the beach, the wacky coral reefs and colorful fish beneath the surface remind us to keep asking questions and get to know the earth and our friends beneath the surface level.
