With trips out in the field right now, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the truly inspiring leaders who work so hard for us. These leaders are the most trustworthy, intelligent, special people who care deeply about the RLT mission and what we stand for as an organization.
At the Road Less Traveled, we take our leadership selection process very seriously. Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best leaders in student service learning travel—and we plan on keeping it that way. These men and women help guide, mentor, and advocate for the students in their groups. They are dedicated to making the experience memorable, safe, and full of life-changing perspectives. And that’s why we’re so proud of all they do.
The average age of our trip leaders is 26, but the minimum age requirement is 21—so all our leaders are mature adults who know to take their positions very seriously. We demand a high level of responsibility from these men and women because while they have students under their leadership, they are their caretakers.
Aside from age and maturity requirements, all of our leaders have a Wilderness First Responder medical certification (many have higher), excellent problem-solving skills, experience with foreign language, and travel skills. Not only do they know the regions in which they lead their student travelers, but they have a deep love and respect for its culture. They take students to Costa Rica and India and so many more interesting places—all with the confidence and knowledge that accompanies a life spent becoming well-traveled.
When our leaders are not out on an adventure with the Road Less Traveled, our leaders live extraordinary lives. Some are in pursuit of doctoral degrees, teach, run businesses, sing in operas…you name it. They are constantly learning and expanding their own personal reach to leave a positive impact on the world. And while they serve as trip leaders, they’re able to impart their wisdom with students, too.
Diversity is a central facet to our leadership team as well. Our leaders come from across the country and have different backgrounds, cultural heritage, and levels of advanced education. Some are experts in SCUBA diving, and some can identify a tree leaf faster than you can say “banana.” This unique collection of skills and understandings make our leaders fascinating and inspiring figures for students as they learn leadership through their example.
Our trip leaders are counselors. They are mentors. They are trustworthy, intelligent, and full of life. Each time a new group of students heads out on a trip, we know that they are in good hands—and you should, too. Take it from them—learn more about our leaders and see what they have to say about their past experiences with the Road Less Traveled.
