The leaders of our expeditions are, quite simply, the best. They are genuine, spirited, friendly, athletic, well-educated and well-traveled experts in wilderness adventure, service learning and language. Each leader is selected personally by us for their ability to prevent and solve problems in the field, their capacity to relate to and enjoy our travelers, their language and travel experience and their knowledge and love of the places we visit. Our leaders take care of every detail, but more importantly, they take good care of you. Best of all, they're the kind of people you want to spend your summer with!

Each Road Less Traveled expedition is limited to ten to twenty-one participants and is managed by two to three adult leaders. When we engage in technical activities such as mountaineering and rock climbing, the number of leaders is augmented by world-class guides, bringing our student-to-leader ratio as low as 2:1. Student to certified teacher ratios in our language courses range from 1:1 to 1:10. All community service learning and adventure expedition leaders are certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technicians (WEMT) or Wilderness First Responders (WFR). International language study leaders have a minimum of Advanced First-Aid training.

INTERNS
Interns are past participants who truly represent The Road Less Traveled experience, having shown an exceptional level of skill and an innate understanding of our philosophy. We have watched them grow into outstanding individuals during their summers with us and are proud to have them as members of our staff. Interns are over age 18, have obtained Wilderness First Responder certification, and act as support staff to our leaders.

Some people leave an imprint behind them. Committed to making the world a better place, they don't travel merely as "tourists" but forge new friendships and connections wherever they go. Traveling with open minds and hearts, they want more than snap-shot recollections of their journeys. They want to see change and create change. Young people who come on RLT programs immerse themselves in places average tourists have never heard of. They come to study languages and new customs, to interact with animals and build schools. They are learners, givers and adventurers.

Coming on a Road Less Traveled community service expedition is a commitment to yourself, to others and to your ability to shape the future. You are guaranteed to get your hands dirty. Hammering nails, carrying fire-hardened bricks and digging holes for fence posts are just some of our construction activities. On international trips, you may find yourself teaching English or weaving with traditional yarn. On domestic trips, you may care for animals or nurture native plants and organic vegetables. The work is challenging; the living conditions may be simple. You might camp beneath the stars, dig your own latrine, or cook local foods. Your only shower may be the ocean, but the rewards are beyond measure.

We design our programs carefully to make sure we only go where help is wanted and where both people and place can benefit from our presence. We pride ourselves on the ethic of responsibility upon which we base our programs, striving to give participants the opportunity to develop their own vision of community service. On an RLT trip, you will learn how to travel, work and give with both thought and conscience. Working hard to serve, you will develop a relationship with the communities we visit, while getting to know yourself more thoroughly.

The Road Less Traveled is open to anyone who welcomes the unique opportunity to have fun, meet new friends and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime. Our expeditions are geared to young people who seek unusual experiences, wanting to learn and be challenged. We explore some of the most extraordinary country in the world, learning a variety of activities such as whitewater rafting and kayaking, backpacking, ice and snow climbing, mountaineering, rock climbing, sea kayaking and desert hiking. The trips aren't always easy, but they offer many gifts. All that's necessary is some sturdy gear, a bit of enthusiasm and a measure of commitment.

Our unique expeditions blend pure adventure with knowledge. The lessons learned on a windswept bluff are often as important as those conveyed in a high school classroom. If you join us, you'll engage mind, muscles and heart in an incredible process of discovery. This happens at sunset around a campfire, on the trail, over a mountain pass, or by a river's edge...

The Road Less Traveled offers programs that are rigorous, challenging, but not competitive. Participants move at their own pace - learning basic skills from map reading and trip planning to mountaineering and whitewater rafting. We progress from the simple to the complex, whether pitching a tent or learning an Eskimo roll in a kayak. It is our mission to offer each participant a rich and full measure of adventure and challenge, an experience that melds independence and teamwork in some of the world's most breathtaking country.

We reach beyond the great wilderness to the fascinating people and cultures of the world. We explore native cultures, witnessing a vital history that lives in dance and music, in sculptures and etchings, and in stories told by some of the most intriguing people you will ever meet.

We dive into nature's mystery and wonder. On slopes and glaciers, in streams and rain forests, you'll feel the hardness of stone and appreciate the softness of water. It's a chance to examine the nature of things. It's a chance to see yourself as part of something timeless and ever changing.
