employment

Thank you for your interest in applying to The Road Less Traveled.  Below you will find a job description and qualifications of a successful leader on our programs.

The Road Less Traveled conducts expeditions of varying lengths. Dates of employment can range anywhere from June 14 to the end of July or middle of August, depending on the trip assignment. These dates include an eight-day staff training for leaders, co-leaders, and interns prior to the expeditions--our leaders have consistently commented that our training is the finest in the field!  On a number of our trips there might be a two to four day unpaid break in between sessions.

While we make every effort to employ each staff for the maximum number of days, we do not hire anyone for a specific expedition and therefore, cannot guarantee length of employment. We believe in making the strongest leader teams possible and sometimes wait until staff training to assign these trips.  Our international trips make an exception to this rule due to the necessity to purchase airline tickets in advance.

The Road Less Traveled offers two staff positions: trip leader and co-leader. Co-leaders work in conjunction with the trip leader in a variety of supportive roles. The trip leader, in addition to the qualifications listed in the co-leader job description, is responsible for implementation of objectives, participant adherence to procedures and regulations, relations with general public and sub-contractors, trip logistics, expenditures and accounting, supervision and evaluation of co-leaders, program evaluations, final trip inventory, and has the overall responsibility for all other aspects of the trip. Most first year staff are co-leaders. If, however, you feel you have the qualifications and would like to apply specifically for our trip leader position, please indicate that on your application. We do also employ a small number of interns during the summer. Interns are past participants of RLT programs, who have completed their first year of college and act as a third staff member on a program.

Your salary with The Road Less Traveled includes all food, lodging, and transportation from the beginning of orientation through the closing of your trip. We also offer pro-deals on outdoor equipment from a variety of well-known manufacturers. Staff members must provide their own personal equipment, emergency spending money, visa fees, inoculation costs and transportation to and from our training site.  Salaries are based on qualifications and experience, and our goal is to hire as many returning staff as possible.

We encourage you to return the application, your résumé and have your three references send in a completed reference form as soon as possible for consideration for the upcoming season.

Sincerely,

Jim and Donna Stein
Directors
