Clouds and sky extend for miles. Dark triangles jut out of the earth. Sunbeams make you squint. Welcome to Wyoming—home to some of the most remote wilderness in the United States. While here, you’ll be exposed to rivers and mountain ranges rich in beauty and history, ready and waiting to provide you with an unforgettable rafting, sea kayaking, backpacking, and rock climbing adventure.
We meet in the Wild West town of Jackson, Wyoming, and then head for Grand Teton National Park. Surrounded by dramatic scenery, we get to know each other while marveling at the long-ago work of glaciers. The Tetons rise up 7,000 feet from our camp in the valley, a tantalizing glimpse into the future of our trip.
We then travel to Bridger-Teton National Forest, where the scenery changes from black rock to vibrant trees. With more than 1,000 different species of plants on 3.4 million acres, the forest is the country’s largest outside Alaska. Our journey takes us into the mountains for a four-day trek between sweet-smelling mahogany and towering aspen trees. Left in its pristine state, this land is home to antelope, eagles, and bears, and we are the visitors.
We head back north along the rocky ridges of the Tetons to the amazing wilderness of Yellowstone National Park. We travel by sea kayaks, well away from the crowds, for three days on Yellowstone Lake. Yellowstone Lake, the largest freshwater lake above 7,500 feet in North America, is an astounding place. With over 135 square miles of open water, we won’t run out of space to paddle. We marvel at geyser basins, camp on pristine beaches, and live in the midst of the largest collection of wildlife in the country.
Finally we return to Jackson. After an exciting half-day rafting the rapids of the beautiful Snake River, which coils near the base of the Tetons, our expedition culminates with a two-day rock climbing course in the Tetons. We train with the Exum Mountain Guides, with an unmatched reputation for excellence, rappelling down expansive rock faces and climbing up rugged canyon walls. People call these crags “the Alps of North America,” and after meeting them face to face, we understand why. As evening nears, we feast our eyes on endless sky, and our appetites on a delicious banquet to celebrate our accomplishments.
