International Travelers' Health
Many questions arise when preparing for the trip of a lifetime. We've organized some useful links to help you find the information you need before you go. Please also feel free to contact the office at 1.800.939.9839.
You will need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining before expiration for all of our international trips. This should be carried on your person while traveling. Make sure that you also have two photocopies of the opening page (with your picture) in case your passport is lost and we need to replace it. We also recommend registering your trip with the U.S. Embassy in your destination country.

To check if there are delays at a domestic airport, use this helpful map on the Federal Aviation Administration's web site.
Making Travel Arrangements
You are welcome to reserve your flights personally or through your own agent, but please contact the office before booking any airfares. Several programs have group flights with seats reserved for our group.
Travel Insurance
The Road Less Traveled requires all participants to have travel insurance. RLT requires this insurance for two reasons. Every year there is a student that is unable to attend their program due to illness or injury and must withdraw. In these situations, RLT is not able to reimburse families. Program costs are paid well in advance of each summer. Second, while The Road Less Traveled has an extraordinary safety record, we strongly feel this insurance is crucial in the event of an emergency evacuation. Evacuation can cost upwards of $10,000 per hour. While the chances of an air evacuation are unlikely, due to the remoteness of many destinations, expensive air evacuations are possible. We suggest you check with your health insurance provider to see if emergency evacuation in foreign destinations is covered.
The coverage must include each of the following benefits, but is not limited to only these:
• Medical Evacuation/Emergency Assistance
• Accidental and Sickness Medical Expense
• Cancellation/Interruption up to full trip cost
RLT does not endorse any one insurance provider. However, we work closely with Travel Guard and strongly recommend their Great Outdoors Travel Insurance Plan. This policy offers not only the mandatory required criteria, but additional coverage such as trip delay, missed connection, sports equipment & personal effect loss and equipment delay.
Spending Money Recommendations
The tuition price includes just about everything: all meals (except for travel days), transportation (excluding air fare), laundry and shower facilities, all gear, all admissions, tolls, guide fees, special events and private tours. We recommend that you bring up to $300 spending money for a phone card, souvenirs, cultural items, gifts, postcards, and personal items. Money should be brought in U.S. dollars, credit card, debit card, Visa Buxx or an American Express Travelers Cheque Card.

Scheduling a Physical
Make an appointment three months before travel to see your family physician as well as a health travel specialist. This is necessary to allow four to six weeks before travel for certain vaccinations to take effect. Inform the physician of your destination and your itinerary.
Center for Disease Control
We recommend that you monitor health updates through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at www.cdc.gov or by phone at 1.800.232.4636 (800-CDC-INFO).
