The Road Less Traveled programs take teens outside to seek adventure, find challenges, make friends, build community, and understand the world in a different way.
In Asia, the world's largest and most populated continent, we visit the top of the world in India, savor the flavors of Thailand, and admire the resilience of Nepal. Cultures and people vary greatly across this massive continent, and many believe it is where human civilization began. We are also excited to introduce our newest expedition to the beautiful countryside paradise of Vietnam.
The Road Less Traveled spans the centuries. We trek, tour, learn, teach, work hard, and have fun. We accompany and support each other along the way.
We have safe houses set up in every location
Our leaders attend a 10-day intense training program
We have a leader return rate of 50%
We register ALL of our travelers, itineraries, and contact information with the US embassy in the destination country so that they can contact us should the need arise
We always have a doctor on call, 24/7, and no traveler has spent a night in a hospital due to an injury
Everyone returns securely home from our international service trips, always changed for the better, and often dreaming of their next adventure with The Road Less Traveled. In fact, many of our teens return to travel with us again in Asia.
Instructors selected for our Asia programs have deep experience with RLT, with young people, and with international travel. Beyond this, they are centered, thoughtful, inspiring, skilled, committed, selfless, and dedicated.
Most importantly, they have strong values: honesty, integrity, respect for the environment, and compassion for others. The average age of our leaders is 26 years old and the minimum is 21. All leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) (or higher) medical certification.
During the school year, our instructors attend school or work as teachers, authors, adventure guides, artists, scientists, emergency medical technicians, and as entrepreneurs across the globe. Previous Asia Instructors have taught English to children in Nepal, completed photography assignments in the Himalayas, worked as backcountry wilderness guides, and traveled extensively in Asia.
While we strive to make sure at least one of our instructors has traveled to the destination country, we believe that other criteria are more important in assigning our instructor teams. We take into consideration the ability to speak the language, seniority, gender mix, and personality.
Get to know last year's Asia program instructors on this page. We will be updating this page with this year's trip leader assignments in the spring.
RLT demands the ultimate responsibility in life. They are more than just leaders, instructors, and mentors. They are guardians, in the most genuine sense of the word – essentially a parent to every child.
Directors and founders, Jim and Donna, would not hesitate to entrust the physical and emotional safety of their own children with any of our instructors. To learn more about our instructors and their backgrounds please visit this page.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE COMMUNICATION:
Safety and communication are important to us. We provide our leaders with the latest emergency communication systems and strive to update parents with detailed emails and photos as often as we are able. Our office keeps in close communication with our trip leaders and complete detailed check-ins that provide us with specific information on each child's experience abroad. We also share photos on an online trip tagboard for you and your family to access at any time.
Because most of our Asia programs have backcountry trekking components and access to regular cellular service can be limited while we are in the mountains, updates will come as we head into town and after our adventure sections. Parents can also expect a phone call home from their child halfway through the trip.
In case of emergency, many of our programs carry an Iridium Satellite phone and can communicate back and forth with local medical facilities, our office, and contact our 24/7 on-call doctor even in areas with little to no cellular service.
Because of Sean, Bree, and Sorcha I felt like I belonged there and they made me so comfortable and confident along with my peers who went on the trip. The confidence that was given to me on this trip will always be with me for the rest of my life," - Jorge O., Thai Dam Dee Alum
I wanted to especially thank James, Julia, Emma and Liz, Shane’s group leaders, for contributing their knowledge, experience and passion for travel. Although Shane has been home now for over a month, we are still hearing and learning about his adventures. The pictures, of course, tell a story, but to hear the verbal descriptions and details of various happenings that occurred on the trip, are simply amazing," Karen H., Parent of a Bodhisattva Alum
Just wanted to send you a little note to say that Jeremy has returned safe and sound and 'changed' from his Namaste experience. He has fallen in love with India - said he felt home immediately there - not at all like it was a foreign place, but strangely familiar. He loved so many things about the trip, but said the AIDS clinic in Jaipur was the most radically enlightening....what you are doing has made a difference to our son," Ruth D., Parent of a Namaste Alum
