Erik was raised in a small Florida town along the Gulf of Mexico playing soccer until the sun went down and bullfrogs called. At 18, Erik took a hike along the Appalachian Trail that ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in the outdoors. While attending the University of Central Florida, Erik spent his summers leading adolescents on backpacking trips in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. He was moved by the creativity and resiliency displayed by his students and invigorated by the mountainous backdrop. After college, Erik spent a year hiking the Colorado Trail, traveling through Italy, and bicycle touring the Western U.S. with close friends. Erik has since become an instructor with both the North Carolina Outward Bound School and Hurricane Island Outward Bound School working substantially with inner city youth and humbly increasing his ability to sail and teach aboard the school’s wooden pulling boats. Recently, Erik has obtained his EMT license, is practicing his fiddle, and immersing himself in the history of the Civil War.
