The first summer I spent with The Road Less Traveled in Hawaii, changed my life. I had never been camping before; I had never even really hiked anywhere. I fell in love instantly. There’s something about being detached that brings out the most real, rough side of you. I enjoyed all the typical fun elements of the trip, but in the end I found myself treasuring the hardships more: the intermittent rain and how we got on in it while in our normal lives we would have hidden, the dirt that got into everything, and the act of getting in and out of my tent at the most inconvenient times. I went on two more trips with The Road Less Traveled and found myself enjoying all of them immensely—each one seemed to bring out something different of me. I now hope to share my initial wonder at the outdoors with others,”-Lizzie
Lizzie Madloch is a rising senior at Skidmore College where she’s a biochemistry major on the Premed track. She works as an EMT for Skidmore Emergency Medical Services and spends her free time rock-climbing, reading Stephen King books, and hiking in the Adirondacks. She had the privilege of leading the Hujambo, Tanzania trip for the Road Less Traveled last summer and is excited to return to her RLT family for more adventures this year. Lizzie’s favorite food is gummy worms and she hopes you remember this because her birthday will most probably fall during one of the trips this summer.
