Hometown: Corvallis, OR
Education: Biology and Environmental Science, Beloit College
Nathan studied Biology and Environmental Science as an undergraduate, since then he has made ice cream professionally, tried to "make it" as a drummer in a band, sat behind a desk doing statistics for a few years, which led him to examine the purpose of his life because spreadsheets just weren't doing it anymore. This led Nathan to relocate from Minnesota to Oregon and to reconnect with his love for wilderness travel and leadership. Nathan has been leading teenagers and young adults in conservation corps work. With the cooperation of his crews, he has built hiking trails, repaired burned bridges, and learned to operate a chainsaw, all while instilling a sense of community, inspiration, and responsibility with his crew members.
Although Nathan didn't participate in RLT programs as a teenager, he has backpacked all over the US and had the opportunity to travel to Peru as a high school student. Nathan has also been to Japan, Iceland, England, and he spent 3 months living on the Galápagos Islands while studying abroad. His motivation in leading RLT trips is an attempt to pass on the unforgettable experiences he has had with the leaders and mentors that taught him outdoor skills and showed him what life can be like outside of the United States.
