The Italian Riviera on the Mediterranean Sea. A mountain refuge for bears and wolves. Ancient wonders of Rome. Renaissance marvels of Florence. The Vatican. Field to table dining (work, then eat!). With these fascinations and more, Italy is a colorful palette of sensory experiences. The Road Less Traveled completes the picture.
The cultural wonders span more than 19 centuries, starting with the Pantheon and leading to the culinary delights of today. Walking in the footsteps of the ancient Romans, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rossini, Machiavelli, Galileo Galilei, Dante and the Medicis is an experience of a lifetime. Looking up at the Sistine Chapel and down on a picturesque seaside from mountain-top villages can’t be done anywhere else.
Along the way are stops for genuine gelato and creamy coffee granita. There’s time to practice Italian cooking skills. And the main gastronomic highlight is the sublime pleasure of sitting in an Italian home, restaurant or café to share a good meal. Food and wine are essential elements of life here.
Service opportunities include volunteering at an organic farm – tilling the land, planting seeds, harvesting crops, foraging for truffles and caring for livestock.

In Italy we stay in a mixture of hostels, hotels, and on a countryside organic farm. We spend time in Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, and in the country-side Village of Sora.
Nestled at the base of the rolling green mountains in Abruzzo National Park, the family-run organic farm is a countryside paradise and culinary haven. During our time there, we hunt for truffles, hike to nearby waterfalls, pick sun-ripened olives, take Italian language lessons, and indulge in the art of Italian cheese-making.
I just want to say thank you for these amazing trips these past three years. I have had so many amazing experiences and have met people who are some of my closest friends today. This recent trip to Italy has been my favorite so far. Seeing the architecture and the art took my breath away and the David nearly drove me to tears. I am so lucky to have gone on this trip," Jessica K., Seme Al Piatto Alum
It was one of my favorite days ever. I was able to talk to Gisseppi about his life in Italy and I learned so much from him. He told me how the farm was passed down to him by his father and how his beautiful horse Stella is 14 years old. I enjoyed every moment of this trip," Stef, Seme Al Piatto Alum
In the future, I hope all of us can experience something as great as this was," Nat B., Seme Al Piatto Alum
