It was January 9th, 2017, the winter holidays had passed, and the New Year’s fireworks fizzled out as the American Camp Association-Illinois gathered for the annual meeting. General updates were shared before Gordie Kaplan, former Executive Director of ACA-IL, took the stage. After spending more than fifty years in the camp world, Kaplan had the honor of announcing the winner of 2016’s Program Excellence Award, recently renamed in his namesake.
Along with leaders of the highest quality camp programs in Illinois, Jim Stein, Co-Owner and Director of The Road Less Traveled (RLT) was in the audience to receive the distinction. The Gordie E. Kaplan Program Excellence Award honors programs “that develop effective, creative responses to the needs of people and/or societal problems using the camp environment to encourage continued development of such ideas, to stimulate the exchange of creative ideas and, to present examples of positive contributions camp has made to the well-being of individuals and society to the public.”
Kaplan spoke to the strong roots in which RLT was founded on, in addition to unwavering dedication to both service and safety. Stay up to date with more happenings from the American Camp Association and know that The Road Less Traveled will continue to set the bar as high as possible for teen travel and summer learning experiences.
