ACCOMMODATIONS AND SHOWERING

Accommodations are in rustic hotels as we travel through the country. Rooms are shared between 3 and 6 people and divided by gender.

Bathrooms and showers can be rustic, so please be prepared. In an effort to save time and conserve water resources in the areas we are traveling, participants will have access to showers every 3-4 days, but will be able to rinse off daily after being in the ocean. Bathrooms are a mix between flush toilets and latrines.

food

All meals on this trip are planned and prepared by our in-country community partners. There may be opportunities to assist in food preparation depending on the preference of the partner.

Expect to eat meals that are consistent with the culture we are visiting. While other food options may be available, we will be sharing meals with our community partners, and eating what they eat as part of our cultural exchange.

We are able to accommodate all dietary requirements and preferences.

TRAVEL

Families are individually responsible for travel arrangements to and from their program destination.

Due to limited flights to Bali, RLT requires that all US-based participants meet at Newark (EWR) in New Jersey, and then fly to Denpasar Airport in Bali (DPS) together as a group. The return flight will be a group flight back to EWR as well.

RLT plans to offer travel coordination assistance in the spring when we release these program-specific details. If it would be more convenient for your participant to book another flight, please contact the office for assistance. It is imperative that no one make any travel arrangements until RLT directs them to do so. For more details, please contact the office.

PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS

For all international travel, we require participants to have a passport that is valid for a minimum of 6 MONTHS past the end date of your participant's RLT trip. If your participant's passport is due to expire within those 6 months, please work on updating your participant's passport as soon as possible upon enrollment. According to the State Department, routine passport renewal will take 10-13 weeks and expedited processing, which costs an additional $60, will take 7-9 weeks. It is your responsibility to ensure your participant's passport is up to date and meets these requirements. We encourage families to familiarize themselves with the U.S. Department of State website for all up-to-date and accurate passport recommendations.

TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

The Road Less Traveled does not provide its own insurance. However, we require participants to purchase travel insurance through a third party for all international programs. For additional details, please visit our FAQ page or you may contact a member of our team at info@theroadlesstraveled.com or 773-342-5200.

VACCINE & MEDICATION INFORMATION

Please note that travel to Bali typically includes a recommendation for additional vaccinations and medications. We encourage you to review the CDC website for the most up-to-date information and consult with your physician or a travel nurse before trip departure. More information will be provided to enrolled families from our Admissions Team in the Spring.

TECHNOLOGY

As part of the RLT experience, our trips are electronic-free. While it is encouraged to travel with cell phones, leaders will collect phones and any other personal devices after all participants arrive on the first day. It can feel tough initially to not have access to your phone, but it really helps everyone in the group to connect and have a really great trip experience. This includes phones, iPods, tablets, gaming devices, music devices, smartwatches, etc. All electronics will be held by RLT leaders, kept safe and dry for the duration of the trip, and returned at the end of the program. All cameras, go pros, etc. are acceptable and can be kept with you! If you do not have a camera, please note that leaders will also be taking photos throughout the program, and these photos will be shared through an online gallery.

Our daughter's RLT experience was life changing!
She made deep, meaningful connections with the other children and the leaders

SAMPLE ITINERARY

blue background.jpg

*Please note the itinerary listed below is the intended itinerary for this trip. No two trips are exactly the same. All itineraries are subject to change to ensure the best possible program experience. Weather, group dynamics, new opportunities, and the unpredictability of travel all shape the final trip itinerary - and it's all part of the adventure!

travel days (Days 1-2)

We leave the US on Day 1 from Newark (EWR) and arrive in Bali on Day 2. We meet our local guides at the airport and briefly transfer to our first night's accommodation in Ubud to settle in.

Dance workshop and a Balinese Blessing Ceremony (Day 3)

On uur first full day, participants will immerse themselves in the Balinese culture. The day will kick off with a language lesson. Then, we will attend a dance and music workshop in the afternoon. The afternoon will wrap up with a traditional Balinese Blessing Ceremony. We will get the unique opportunity to participate in the ceremony designed to give blessings to students in the hope that they will be ready to learn and be filled with knowledge.

Herbal Walk, Temple visit, Royal Palace Tour (Day 4)

We will start our day with a Herbal Walk. During our walk, a grandchild of a traditional Balinese healer will take us to the Campuhan River Valley and teach us how to identify therapeutic and medicinal herbs. Then we will visit the Tirta Empul Water Temple. In the afternoon, we will tour a Coffee Plantation before visiting the biggest Royal Palace in the Gianyar Area.

White Water Rafting and Batik Workshop (Day 5)

It's time to get our adrenaline pumping! Our morning will begin with an adventurous 10-mile rafting journey on the beautiful and scenic Telaga Waja River—Rapids on this river range from class 2 to class 4. In the afternoon, we will attend a Batik Workshop. In this workshop, we will try the wax drawing and dyeing techniques Bali is famous for!

Cooking class and City Exploration (Day 6)

There is no better way to understand and learn about a culture than through its food. We will participate in a cooking class in the morning and learn how to make traditional Balinese food. In the afternoon, we will have time to explore Ubud, the spiritual heart of Bali! There is plenty to see and do, from vibrant markets to traditional architecture and local produce.

Travel Day,  coral reef Service, Sunset boat ride (Day 7)

We will begin our transfer to Pemuteran. On the way, we will visit the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. Once settled into our accommodation in Pemuteran, we will learn about the Coral Reef Restoration Project. Pemuteran Biorock Coral Restoration Project has been running since 2000 as a collaboration between the Karang Lestari Foundation and the Global Coral Reef Alliance. The project, which has planted around 70 “biorock” coral reef structures, each of a different size and shape, has restored the devastated coral reefs and fisheries of Pemuteran Bay. The alliance claimed the project to be the world’s largest, longest running and best coral reef restoration project. In 2012, this project was awarded the Equator Prize by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The day will wrap up with a stunning sunset boat ride.

Scuba Certification Course and Dive Days (Days 8 - 10)

Over the next few days we focus on the diving portion of the trip. Those new to diving will undertake the PADI Open Water certification to allow them to dive safely and competently. Participants with previous dive experience can take a refresher course or work on developing their existing skills with other certifications. The warm tropical waters are the perfect place to dive, rich with marine life and underwater habitats to explore.

Service work with Biosphere (Day 11)

Today is a full day of service. We will learn to collect overgrown seaweed from the shoreline and create organic soil fertilizer. We will do so by assembling piles of brown materials (leaves and yard trimmings) and green materials (seaweed).

Waterfall Hike and transfer to sanur (Day 12)

We are saying goodbye to Pemuteran and heading to Sanur. To break up the travel day, we will stop along the way to hike up to a picturesque waterfall. Once in Sanur, the group will settle into their hotel for the evening and enjoy a relaxing night before another day of service!

Service with RipCurl Indonesia and NGO Site Visit (Day 13)

The day begins with service on Sanur's beaches. In this service project, we will be able to clean up trash from the mangrove area of Sanur with a stand-up paddleboard. In the afternoon, we will learn about Ecollab and its effort to reduce plastic waste through recycling and upcycling plastic waste.

Surf Lessons and Beach Day (Day 14)

The last full day in Bali will be spent on Legian Beach, named after the Balinese word for "sweet and pleasant." Legian Beach is the perfect place to enjoy the sun and water sports. We spend the morning surfing the waves as we test our balance and develop our surfing skills. We will stay at Legian Beach for the afternoon before returning to Sanur for our final celebration dinner.

Homeward Bound (Days 15 -16)

After a busy 2 weeks, we say our final goodbyes before boarding our flights home.
