Join us on our 14-day teen SCUBA community service and marine conservation program in the Florida Keys. Participants will get certified as PADI Open Water Divers or work on developing existing qualifications, before putting these diving skills to good use. Partnering with the Coral Restoration Foundation, we help with underwater service work to protect and restore the Reef. This unique service is vital to protect the underwater ecosystems.

This trip showed me just how important it is to take risks and experience what I am passionate about. Seeing the world and making the most of what it has to offer with people who have the same desire gave me what a million words and pictures could never do.

AccommodationS and showering

We sleep in a private home (Airbnb-style) for the entire program. Bedrooms in the private home will be divided by gender and participants will sleep slumber party-style – rotating available beds nightly, and sharing beds as needed.

In an effort to save time and conserve water resources in the areas we are traveling, participants will have access to showers every 3-4 days even when showers are readily available in private housing accommodations. On days with ocean-based activities, participants will be able to rinse off with fresh water. Bathrooms are flush toilets.

food

Participants on this trip will plan, prepare, and eat meals as a group. Split up into smaller cook crews, each crew will have the chance to prepare a meal approximately once per day. This process is supervised by staff who offer advice on nutrition, and menu planning, and ensure safe food storage, preparation, and handling.

Meals are prepared in the kitchen of our Airbnb-style accommodations with access to a full kitchen. The nature of cooking for a large group sometimes requires a simpler menu than a restaurant or home cook might allow.

We are able to accommodate all dietary requirements and preferences.

TRAVEL

Families are individually responsible for booking their own airfare or making their own travel arrangements to get their student from home to Miami Airport (MIA) on the first day of the trip, and from Miami (MIA) to home on the last day of the trip. RLT will provide exact windows of time that we require all students to arrive and depart within. It is imperative that no one make any travel arrangements until RLT directs them to do so.

TRAVEL INSURANCE RECOMMENDATIONS

The Road Less Traveled does not provide its own insurance nor do we require travel insurance for domestic trips. However, travel insurance can protect your investment in your participant's trip from the risk of unexpected expenses from last-minute cancellations or early trip departure. If you are interested in more details regarding travel insurance, please visit our FAQ page or you may contact a member of our team at info@theroadlesstraveled.com or 773-342-5200.

TECHNOLOGY

As part of the RLT experience, our trips are electronic-free. While it is encouraged to travel with cell phones, leaders will collect phones and any other personal devices after all participants arrive on the first day. It can feel tough initially to not have access to your phone, but it really helps everyone in the group to connect and have a really great trip experience. This includes phones, iPods, tablets, gaming devices, music devices, smartwatches, etc. All electronics will be held by RLT leaders, kept safe and dry for the duration of the trip, and returned at the end of the program. All cameras, go pros, etc. are acceptable and can be kept with you! If you do not have a camera, please note that leaders will also be taking photos throughout the program, and these photos will be shared through an online gallery.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

blue background.jpg

*Please note the itinerary listed below is the intended itinerary for this trip. No two trips are exactly the same. All itineraries are subject to change to ensure the best possible program experience. Weather, group dynamics, new opportunities, and the unpredictability of travel all shape the final trip itinerary - and it's all part of the adventure!

Arrival (Day 1)

Arrive in Miami Airport where the leaders will be ready and waiting. Once the whole group has arrived, we head south to Sunset Cove in Key Largo. Spend the evening settling into our accommodation, playing games, and getting to know each other.

PADI Courses (Days 2-5)

On day 2 we jump straight into our diving courses where students will work with top PADI instructors. Those new to diving will learn the fundamentals, completing a combination of pool and open water dives. Experienced divers will jump straight into the ocean to continue building on existing skills. In the evenings we take a REEF class, explore the area, and hang out in the Keys.

Everglades exploring (Day 6)

The Everglades is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River! The perfect place to spend the day exploring!

Shipwreck Dive (Day 7)

Explore the remains of the USS Benwood, which sank during World War II. She was built as a merchant marine freighter and was 360 ft long. Now, she lies under 25-45 feet of water and is often home to large schools of grunts, snapper, and goatfish!

Citizen Science Snorkel Trip (Day 8)

Working with REEF, we help educate visitors and capture data to help with ongoing studies that support marine environments and conservation efforts.

John Pennekamp State Park (Day 9)

We take a day to relax with a morning beach clean up and afternoon snorkeling and BBQing at John Pennekamp State Park.

Underwater Community Service Project (Days 10-13)

Using our PADI open water skills, we work alongside the Coral Restoration Foundation. We harvest staghorn coral from the nurseries off Key Largo and replant it on Molasses Reef to help reverse the damage done by natural and human disasters. Tour the Loggerhead Marine Life Center to learn how endangered sea turtles are rehabilitated.

Homeward Bound (Day 14)

Following our traditional final night banquet, we say our final goodbyes in Miami and board the flights home.
